London to hit revenue target

Revenue from sponsorship and ticket sales should top initial forecasts, putting the London Organising Committee on course to keep its side of the Olympic bargain, LOCOG chief executive Paul Deighton told Reuters in an interview on Monday.

LOCOG will not publish final accounts until after the Games end, prompting criticism from London politicians and British media about a lack of transparency.
“I broadly expect us to break even, said Deighton, who worked for investment bank Goldman Sachs for two decades before joining LOCOG in 2006.
“One way I describe our project is trying to land about £2 billion of revenues, with about £2 billion of costs. We have got committed just over 92 percent of the revenues we need,” he said, adding the remainder should come from ticket sales and merchandising.

GB athletes Banned from shaking hands

The British Olympic Association’s chief medical officer, Dr Ian McCurdie, believes athletes could easily pick up a harmful virus in the “stressful environment” of the Games.
As a result, Dr McCurdie has commanded British athletes to not shake hands as he considers it to be a very real danger to their health.

Fiona Pennie – Interesting Facts

Fiona missed out on a place in the GB team in 2009 and during that time learnt to paddle and competed internationally in the relatively new Women’s Canoe Single event.

Her mother was an international canoe sprint paddler.

Fiona has played in boats since she was just a few months old.

David Florence – Interesting Facts

David was one of the first ever GB slalom canoeists to win a medal in both C1 and C2 individual classes at an international event; The 2009 World Cup Series.

He first started recreational canoeing in 1996, and entered his first slalom race in the K1 class in May 1997.

His father, George also used to race in the K1 class.

He achieved one of his canoeing goals when he won a silver medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

He is meticulous in preparation.

He has an upper second class degree in Mathematical Physics, from the University of Nottingham.
