Elite Coaching Apprentice Programme

Congratulations to GB Canoeing coaches Nick Smith (Slalom) and Ian Wynne (Sprint), who were amongst 12 coaches from different sports to successfully complete UK Sport’s inaugural Elite Coaching Apprenticeship Programme. Over the programme’s two year duration, the coaches have attended seven workshops covering a range of areas relevant to coaches working with elite athletes, complemented by on the job implementation and mentoring. One of the aims of the final workshop – held at the Ashridge Business School just prior to Christmas – was to consolidate non-technical coaching skills and put them to the test during a final activity. The challenge enabled the coaches to step into roles that they may not be comfortable doing and provided an opportunity to practice the skills they have learnt during the two years and see where they may still need to develop.
