last year there was 150,000 cubic metres of soil required to build up the 5.5m start pull walls, and to build the lake. There is now more then 500 piles now ready for the construction of the building this month.

The lake is due to be completed during the summer of 2010. It is planned to be concrete based with concreted sandbags forming the banks and walls.

The 300m Olympic course is also taking shape alone the western side of the centre. the earthworks are due to finish on the Olympic course early this year ready for concreting and the Olympic course is due to be completed in the summer of 2010.

The 160m intermediate course is also on schedule and earthworks are due to finish in the next few months ready for concreting and completion in the summer of 2010.

Broxbourne white water canoe centre is on course to be open for public use in spring of 2011. The ground works are well under way and the foundations of the building have been completed. BWWCC will be the only brand new olympic venue to be open to the public before the olympic games in 2012. They have worked to make it not only the most depanding course in the world but the best training base for white water aswell.

Theres a new information site at YHA Lee Valley which is around 20 minite walk away from the site. this is a drop in centre and has loads of information about the new site.

Welcome to this months edition to the construction updates.

Since my last post less then a month ago a lot has happened, as you will see in the pictures in this post that I have tried to take from the same camera position. There is lots of new material, that was not there a few weeks ago.

Four weeks ago it was being counted that at least 10 dumper trucks a hour was entering the site to leave soil and dirt. Now there are reports that this has stopped and the earth works for the new site have finished. This means the site is now well under way of being constructed.

From the look of the progress the New Broxbourne White Water Canoe Centre is well on its way and may be opened earlier then expected.

I have recently visited the New White Water site where they have well and truly started the construction. There has been reports of more then 50 lorries filled with earth being delivered to the site daily. All this earth has been used to construct the banks of the course.

As you can see from the picture below. There really has been a lot of progress since July, and whats more they say the construction is ahead of schedule which means it could be open even earlier.

Now construction has officially started I hope to be blogging about the construction of the site at least once a month to tell you about any major change to the site.

HYMB’s open day. a day for all the family to come down to Herts Young Mariners Base for a day of free activities all day long.

We were told about the plans, and test event to be held at the new Olympic white water course in 2011, as well as being invited to go down there to view the venue in 2011 while the test runs are taking place.

We were filmed doing a training season on the lake, which was frozen until we broke the ice, and very cold.

We got on the lake in plastic boats to break the ice and warm up. After about half an hour we got in our slalom boats and started showing off our skills while doing our training.

Then we got off the water at about 10 o’clock and had photographs taken of us on the side of the lake with our boats and the other new equipment HYMB have recently bought, for example our two brand new paddle machines, and the plastic slalom and wavehopper boat.

When I find out where the picture and film of the day are I will update with a link to view the pictures.

It was an early start (when isn’t it when I’m slaloming) 8:00 we needed to meet at HYMB.  But leaving on time is not something we are good at, and when we were meant to be leaving at half past eight we left at more like nine.

However we got to Yalding near Hastings, unpacked all the kit and jumped straight onto the water to get some practise in. I found the course a little boring but I thought I could get the job done to get my promotion. But there was a little twist to this course unlike all the other courses I’ve paddled on.  The weir was not under the control of the canoe centre but under control of the Environmental Agency. This meant the weir gate opened and closed without notice. While I was getting some practise on the upper part of this course the gate opened and went from calm to very ruough,  but I like the big stuff so as there were no events running at this time me and some other people jumped straight into the wave and had some good fun.

However i needed to get back to business and I did.  I did my first run and it seemed quite good and then my second which was not as good. However my first run put me in second place so I walked away from the event with a division 3 second place 944 points and a promoton.

We got to St Lawrence Bay at about 2pm.  Before we got in the kayaks we needed to get changed and put all of the kit we wanted to take into the kayaks so that we had it all at the other end.  This required a lot of ramming of kit into the boats! We got on the water at about 4pm for a long trip ahead of us. The water was fairly smooth most of the way and we had the wind with us so it was quite a good trip.

However when we got to our planned destination we found that the dry hatches did not work too well so all of our stuff got very wet!  But we managed to set up a camp (no tents, just a tarp to sleep under Ray Mears style) and got a fire going so that we could get dinner on the go as soon as possible as it was then 8pm and we were all very hungry.

It rained quite a lot during the night and I am pleased that I had not put a groundsheet down as the others had (a tip I recalled from watching Ray Mears)- meaning that their bedrolls were in puddles of rain .

The next day we planned to leave at 6am but we were not up until 6am so by the time we had breakfast and packd up the camp and loaded the kayaks again we left at about 8am and set of for the 4 hour trip.  This time we were kayaking into the wind so the trip was not quite so easy and when we got back we were all very tired.  We loaded the kayaks on the trailer then realised we needed the stuff out of them so we took them all off the trailer and took all of our kit out before putting them back on the trailer.

We arrived back at the Herts Young Mariners Base at 2:45pm.

We meet at HYMB at mid day to load the kayaks onto the trailers and then set off for St Lawrence Bay.  The plan is to get on the Blackwater and paddle (with all of our gear in the kayaks) to the most easterley point on Mersea Island.  That is approximately 16Km.

At Mersea Island we will set up camp for the night, make a fire to cook dinner and get an early night (well see!).

In the morning the plan is to get up early, pack up camp and paddle back with the tide to the cars.
