Hey there

Worrying developments over the last few days. Following what was initially an anonymous contact though my feedback form which lead to a couple of exchanges of emails and a brief meeting this morning, I was informed of some problems at the new Olympic white water site.

I cant go into details just yet as I need them to come back to me with further information first.

I would love to give you more details but I am stuck between a rock and a hard place until I hear more.

Water flows for the first time

This week testing has started at the Lee Valley White Water Centre The ODA is puting the course though its paces to make shore that it offers a challanging but cappable course that can last for many years to come. This has been a well looked forward event for many people and with sites set on paddling the course before the olympics everyone is very keen to see what the course looks like now. This attraction is going to change the uk slalom in so many ways. There is going to be lots of new people to the sport and a big tourist attraction for those that are really into the sport.

volunteers wanted for 2012

Today we officially launch the London 2012 Games Maker programme – the search for up to 70,000 volunteers who will help make the Games happen.

You’ve already registered your interest in volunteering; now is the time for you to find out if you’ve got what it takes to be a Games Maker. You can find all the information you need at london2012.com/volunteering

Applications for the general public open on 15 September. So you’ve got time to take the Games Maker challenge, read about volunteering roles, and find out if you’re eligible to be a Games Maker.

As we celebrate two years to go to the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, there’s plenty more to get involved with.

London 2012 Mascots

The new London 2012 mascots have been released and there are mixed feelings about them. Many people hoped for a British bulldog or a lion but the designers for the mascots moved away from animals and came up with a totally new idea.

The new mascots have been named Wenlock and Mandeville. They start out there life as just bit of wasted steal however they are taken home and cast into characters then magicly they come alive.

Hymcops upcoming competitions this week

These are the competitions there we will be taking part in the next week or so.
The next race of the Essex Sprint Series takes place at Chelmsford on Saturday 1st May 2010

There is a Div 3 / 4 Slalom event on the River Loddon at Readng on the 2nd / 3rd May 2010, we will not be attending this event as a club but you may borrow equipment and go to this event.

Tuesday evening is the 2nd round of the Harefield Summer Series of Marathon style races which HYM COPS are currently leading (info attached).

Cardiff White Water Canoe Centre

The new white water centre in Cardiff has been open for testing and local canoe clubs were invited to test the course before it openned to the public!

This course gives a real in site to what the new Broxbourne course will look like.

Broxbourne White Water Canoe Centre New Year Update

The construction is well under way and great progress has been made. The works are well on schedule with the piling works finishing before schedule. The foundations of the building are complete. and the new year looks good for the New White Water Centre. with this year being the year that the centre is due to be completed and ready to be open to the public in spring 2011.

last year there was 150,000 cubic metres of soil required to build up the 5.5m start pull walls, and to build the lake. There is now more then 500 piles now ready for the construction of the building this month.

The lake is due to be completed during the summer of 2010. It is planned to be concrete based with concreted sandbags forming the banks and walls.

The 300m Olympic course is also taking shape alone the western side of the centre. the earthworks are due to finish on the Olympic course early this year ready for concreting and the Olympic course is due to be completed in the summer of 2010.

The 160m intermediate course is also on schedule and earthworks are due to finish in the next few months ready for concreting and completion in the summer of 2010.

Septembers Site Construction Update

Hello

Welcome to this months edition to the construction updates.

Since my last post less then a month ago a lot has happened, as you will see in the pictures in this post that I have tried to take from the same camera position. There is lots of new material, that was not there a few weeks ago.

Four weeks ago it was being counted that at least 10 dumper trucks a hour was entering the site to leave soil and dirt. Now there are reports that this has stopped and the earth works for the new site have finished. This means the site is now well under way of being constructed.

From the look of the progress the New Broxbourne White Water Canoe Centre is well on its way and may be opened earlier then expected.

Broxbourne White Water Canoe Centre Cost To Double to £30 million

The Evening Standard are reporting tonight that the estimated cost of building the White Water Canoe Centre in Broxbourne, has doubled to £30 million pounds. Broxbourne White Water Canoe Centre is the intended venue for canoe and kayak slalom in the London 2012 Olympics,

The article goes on to suggest some concerns expressed by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) of the course being a white elephant after the games. However the BCU explain that they have long been looking for a venue for the London area.

Building work is currently expected to start in May 2009.
